HHS names new basketball coach

(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County school board approved the hiring of a new varsity men’s basketball coach at Tuesday night’s meeting of the BOE.

Keith Simmons will take over after the sudden departure recently of first year head coach Paul Fitz-Simons. Fitz-Simons resigned to accept an assistant principal job at Carrollton High School.

Simmons will come over from Carrollton High where he has been an assistant coach and teacher for the last three years. He also has six years of head coaching experience at Beach High School in Savannah.

Coach Simmons attended Carrollton High School (Class of 1999) and received his teaching degree at Georgia Southern University (Class of 2004). He is eager to start working with a young Brave squad that returns all five starters with some depth behind them.

“I am really looking forward to working at Heard County. Everyone I have met here has just been awesome so far,” said Simmons via phone interview Tuesday evening.

“I have seen some of these Heard kids at some camps where I was refereeing and they are some real good kids — they play hard and we have a good mix of some young guys and some veteran guys coming back. I think we will have a pretty good season — these guys almost made the playoffs last year so they are already close.”

Heard County High School athletic director Shane Lasseter is very pleased to make a good hire on short notice.

“Keith is a great teacher, coach and person,” said Lasseter. “He loves kids and every place he has been echoed those things about him. We are glad to add him to our program and I know our program is better because he is in it.”
