Hillabahatchee Creek Bridge reopens to traffic

The Hillabahatchee Creek Bridge on HWY 34 reopened to traffic Wednesday but motorists are still advised to use caution as additional work is ongoing through the end of the month

(Franklin, GA) — The Hillabahatchee Creek Bridge on HWY 34 west reopened Wednesday afternoon just west of Franklin.

It was welcome news for residents in several areas that had been affected by the detour traffic and area truckers that had been forced to detour through Lagrange not just to reach Franklin and 34 east but also in order to access HWY 27 and HWY 100.

According to a Georgia DOT press release from early June, the bridge rehabilitation was undertaken to improve the ride ability of the bridge deck, repair spalls in the substructure, paint the steel piles and remove vegetation from within 20′ of the underside of the bridge.

Although the majority of the work has been completed and the bridge is now reopened, motorists are still advised to use caution in the area as additional work will likely continue through the end of July.

Whenever you approach any work zone: slow down; allow extra distance between vehicles; read signs; and expect the unexpected.

Prior to the repairs, many locals previously referred to the bridge as “the bouncy bridge.”
