Local woman arrested in Heard County pipe bomb investigation

(Franklin, GA) — Authorities have made an arrest in the case of the pipe bomb located in northwestern Heard County in late September.

31-year-old Brandie Ann Massie was taken into custody by the Heard County Sheriff’s Office on Friday and faces a felony charged of Manufacturing, Transporting, Distributing, possession with intent to distribute, and offering to distribute an explosive device (GA. Code 16-7-82).

According to a press release issued by the HCSO, Investigators Sgt. Dan Boswell and Lt. Deborah Williamson originally identified the explosive device on September 28.

The device was located on a roadside near the intersection of Wright and Brandenburg Roads after following up on a tip from an unidentified source.

At the time, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist and the device was rendered safe by Special Agent Cobb of the GBI Bomb Unit.

During the initial investigation, authorities had very little information to go on other than the first names of some potential suspects — but after following up on several leads, investigator Boswell and Special Agent Cobb determined that Massie was allegedly the person who possibly built the device and had possession.

Massie was arrested without incident on Friday, October 28 at a Pope Road address in an area relatively near the location where the bomb was originally found.

Pope Road and Brandenburg/Wright Roads are located a few miles northwest of Franklin near the intersection of HWY 100 North and Roosterville Road.

Although Massie is now in custody, the investigation is ongoing as authorities try to determine who else may have been involved in assisting her with making the device.

Attempts are also being made to locate any additional devices that may have been built.

Arrest records indicate Massie’s home address as being on Notnomis Road between Roosterville Road and Centralhatchee.

Massie was also arrested by Heard authorities on August 8 of this year and charged with Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving While Unlicensed, Failure to Stop at Stop Sign, Improper Stopping in Roadway and Fleeing/Attempting to Elude. She was additionally arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in December of 2014.

A pipe bomb is a simple type of improvised explosive device, a tightly sealed section of pipe filled with an explosive material.

The containment provided by the pipe means that simple low explosives can be used to produce a relatively large explosion, and the fragmentation of the pipe itself creates potentially lethal shrapnel.

She isnt a bad person and ive known her since we were both ten. She has mental health issues and its gotten worse since January of this year. I dont believe she intended to hurt anyone or anything. I hope she gets the help she needs and everyone isnt so quick to judge her because sometimes things arnt as they are made out to be. Just saying. Thank you.

You are correct on Brandie not being a bad or evil person. I have known her for a long time and was shocked to read this tonight. I do not know about any mental health issues…nevertheless she could have caused herself and others a great deal of harm and that is not the Brandie I remember.

I suppose it’s easy to quickly speculate and then harshly judge people without knowing exactly what they have been through in regards to their home/friend/relationship or private personal life. As a young child throughout Kindergarten to high school…She has always been kind, happy, sweet, helpful and never had feelings of intentional harming anyone.
