(Franklin) — For the third time in a year, a Lady Brave softball player has committed to a major university on a softball scholarship.

Sophomore Anna Shelnutt gave a verbal commitment Wednesday evening to join her teammate Cali Harrod at one of the top softball schools in the nation, Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

Shelnutt becomes the second player in the Class of 2016 to commit to the ACC university. “It is just a lifelong dream come true,” said Shelnutt. “I am just so excited I am completely speechless.”

She was rewarded for her tremendous 2012 freshman season with a spot on the All-Region 5-AA team and a second team spot on the all state team after putting together a stellar rookie season at the plate.

Anna finished the season with a .530 average, five home runs, and an outstanding 43 RBI’s and played a huge role in the team’s third place finish at the Class AA State Tournament in Columbus. Shelnutt also proved to be very clutch, delivering a .571 batting average with runners in scoring position.

Anna mostly womans the hot corner for the Lady Braves, but was offered the scholarship by FSU at her more natural catcher position.

Lady Braves head coach Matt Hornsby thinks the Seminoles are getting an awesome player. “Anna’s catching abilties over the last couple of years have really come on strong,” said Hornsby. “As far as hitting, I have thought since the middle of last year that she is as good of a hitter as Cali Harrod, who already signed with FSU. The Seminoles are getting two great hitters in those two.”

“We were thinking we might get the offer next week, but it came through early for us by Skype last night, ” said Anna’s mom Yolonda Shelnutt. “We are so excited. The coaches are awesome at FSU and the family atmosphere down there is just what we were looking for in a school.”

Anna and the rest of the Lady Braves begin their regular season tomorrow in the Villa Rica Tournament at the V-Plex in Villa Rica. They will face McIntosh at 7:15 and Central of Carrollton at 8:45. Saturday’s games will be determined based on Friday’s results.
