Tragic shooting claims life of 22-year-old

(Lagrange, GA) — A young Troup County woman died following a shooting late Sunday just north of Lagrange.

Haley Newsom passed away following a tragic shooting Sunday evening

According to a press release issued by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Haley Newsom passed away at an Atlanta Hospital following a shooting that took place Sunday evening.

Deputies and investigators with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office responded to 108 Meadowland Trail at 8:35 PM in regards to a person that had been shot.

Once on the scene, Newsom was found unresponsive in the driveway with what was believed to be a gunshot wound to head.

“The responding units quickly began rendering life saving measures to Newsom until fire and ambulance personnel arrived and took over care and transported her to Well Star West Georgia Medical Center. From there Newsom was airlifted to an Atlanta area hospital where she later died,” said authorities in the press release.

Reports indicate a recent 2020 Heard County High School graduate was involved in the shooting.

“After speaking with witnesses in the home, investigators have determined that the following occurred. A 17-year-old white male identified as Cameryn Phillips was waving a handgun around in the living room of the residence when the gun discharged — striking Newsom in the head causing her to immediately fall to the ground. At that point Phillips ran over to Newsom, picked her up and carried her outside as he was going to attempt to take her to the hospital for medical care, which is where deputies made contact with them,” added TCSO in the statement.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, but no charges have been filed at this time.

Haley Newsom also attended Heard County schools from Pre-K through 3rd grade before later attending and graduating from Troup County High School.
