Tragic shooting death ruled an accident

(Franklin, GA) — Authorities are ruling the shooting death of a local man earlier this weekend as a tragic accident.

25-year old Ezekiel Scott Bailey died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound around 5:30 PM Saturday afternoon in front of a friend’s home in northern Heard County.

According to a report by investigator Lt. Deborah Williamson of the Heard County Sheriff’s Office, alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the death.

In addition to the HCSO, Heard County EMS and Heard County Coroner’s Office all responded to the home at 1080 Favor Road.

“At this time, it appears that this is an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound with alcohol use being the contributing factor,” said Williamson Sunday morning.

Williamson says there were multiple residents including one eyewitness that saw the shooting take place near a vehicle Bailey had just exited in front of the home. Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police recovered the 40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun allegedly used in the shooting at the scene.

Coroner Kathie Buchanan is asking for support from the community for the grieving family.

“On behalf of myself and all of our local public safety officers we ask you to please keep Zeke’s friends and family in your thoughts and prayers during this painful time,” said Buchanan Sunday afternoon.

Bailey was a very popular member of the Centralhatchee community and a 2010 graduate of Heard County High School.

A visitation will be held at Stutts Funeral Home Tuesday from 11 AM to 1 PM and will be followed by the funeral at 2PM at Centralhatchee First Baptist Church in Centralhatchee.
