Dewayne Smith, a 14-year old Troup High School freshman, was riding his bicycle on Thursday evening in Lagrange when he was struck by a van which then fled the scene.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident took place at around 6:15 p.m. on Stovall Road near South Glenn Road. Smith was life flighted to Children’s Hospital at Egleston in Atlanta where he remains in intensive care this morning.
A family member of Smith, Mia McLendon, told us today that Dewayne has severe head injuries and that the family is asking everyone to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.
BREAKING UPDATE (Friday 4:13 p.m.): Matt Chambers is currently reporting in The Lagrange Daily News that 70-year old James Wells of Woodbury turned himself in to authorities Friday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing but Wells is currently being held at the Troup County jail on a $25,000 bond on a charge of hit and run while other charges may be pending. Dewayne Smith is currently still listed in critical condition this afternoon at Egleston.
