Two dead after head-on crash in Franklin

(Franklin, GA) — A double fatality accident due to a wrong-way driver closed both north and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 in Franklin for a short time Friday evening.

According to a report by Georgia State Patrol Trooper J.P. Hogan, the accident occurred at around 10:30 PM just north of the new Chattahoochee Bridge.

Witnesses say 69-year-old Michael Ferraiuolo of Carrollton, GA was driving a Mercedes SUV when he entered the southbound lanes of HWY 27 from the HWY 34 entrance ramp on the south side of the bridge just moments prior to the crash.

Ferraiuolo was traveling northbound in the southbound passing lane when he crashed head-on with a southbound 2018 Honda CRV driven by 26-year-old Dhavel Patel of Lagrange, GA. Both drivers died as a result of the collision.

Ferraiuolo was pronounced dead at the scene while Patel was transported to Tanner Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Trooper Hogan says both single occupant drivers were wearing seat belts and he does not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Pending a coroner’s inquiry, officials are investigating if a possible medical emergency may have been a contributing factor in the collision.

The fatalities are two of eight already reported as of 2:00 PM Saturday in the State of Georgia for the official holiday travel period that officially began at 6:00 PM Friday. Only three fatalities were reported during the entire 78-hour holiday travel period in 2018.

The GSP worked two other accidents in Heard County on Friday but neither resulted in serious or life-threatening injuries.
