BREAKING NEWS: Winter Storm Warning prompts early school release Friday

(Franklin, GA) — The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Heard County and much of north Georgia due to an impending winter weather event this weekend.

The winter precipitation is expected to begin as a rain only event Friday afternoon before developing into a wintry mix and snow later tonight.

WINTER-STORM-WARNINGTemperatures are expected to dip down into the mid 20’s overnight meaning travel could be treacherous at least through Saturday morning.

Forecast models currently are predicting between 1-4 inches of snow accumulations by Saturday morning.

Colder temperatures will remain throughout the weekend so motorists are encouraged to use extreme caution and pay close attention to forecasts and public safety information that may be released.

The Heard County school system will release students two hours ahead of schedule on Friday and parents of bus riders can expect them to arrive home about two hours earlier than normal.

“After speaking with GEMA officials and attending National Weather News briefings all day about the upcoming winter weather it has been determined that it will be safest for Heard County Schools to dismiss children at 1:00 pm Friday so that all children and adults are off the road by 4:00 PM,” said superintendent Rodney Kay in a statement Thursday evening.

“We are sorry for the inconveniences this may cause parents, but we are going to err on the side of caution in this very delicate matter,” added Kay.

Car riders may be picked up at Heard High School and Heard Middle beginning at 1:00 PM and at the three elementary schools at 1:15 PM. 12 for life students will not be working Friday.

Additionally, all sports and other extra-curricular activities have been cancelled for the weekend including the scheduled home basketball games vs. Jordan that were scheduled for Friday and the area wrestling meet originally scheduled to take place at Chattooga High School on Saturday.

The basketball games will be made up at a later date, while the wrestling dual meet is tentatively re-scheduled for Monday.

Governor Nathan Deal will issue a state of emergency in anticipation of Friday night’s winter storm beginning at noon Friday that does include Heard County along with most of North and Central Georgia.

The declaration will assure that all necessary resources are available for state agencies and local governments to clear roads and all other winter storm-related obstacles. Stay tuned to HeardCitizen.com for further updates as they happen.
