(Carrollton, GA) — Carrollton High School boys head basketball coach Tim Criswell is recovering in an Atlanta hospital from injuries sustained in a Saturday morning bicycling accident.

Criswell and his wife Dawn were out for a Saturday morning ride on The GreenBelt near Hay’s Mill Road when the accident took place, resulting in Tim Criswell being flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Dawn Criswell was taken to Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton for minor injuries.

Carrollton High School Principal David Brooks told the Times-Georgian Saturday night that the veteran Trojan head coach was in stable condition in the ICU at Grady after initially being admitted to the trauma center for a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a head injury.

“He was moving his legs and arms and was just kind of agitated at the things that were hooked up to him,” Brooks said. “It was a bad accident and a very unfortunate accident, but he seemed to be doing better when we left over there. They’re still doing tests and monitoring and things of that nature.”

According to Brooks, doctors said there was an “oozing” of blood on the brain and not “bleeding.” Criswell was expected to remain in the ICU for at least 18-24 hours for monitoring, but the outlook was encouraging as of Saturday night.

Dawn Criswell was released from Tanner Saturday afternoon and was on her way to Grady to be with her husband, according to Brooks.

Brooks said the biggest thing the local community can do right now is offer its prayers and support to the Criswell family.

“Tim Criswell is a great man and has done so much for this community. We’d just appreciate everybody’s thoughts and prayers right now as they’re going through this tough time,” Brooks said. “We are confident that through prayers and everything else that he will come right on the other side and everything will be OK. That’s what we’re hoping for right now. The doctor seems cautiously optimistic about everything. A lot of the moving and him being a little verbal and moving his legs and arms and trying to get comfortable, they all indicated that was a very good sign.”
