Chairman issues statement on Georgia Power

(Franklin) — Heard County Board of Commissioners Chairman Lee Boone released the following statement this week in response to an earlier press release issued by Georgia Power regarding ash ponds:

img1020Georgia Power’s Plant Wansley is not only an energy producer, but is also an economic engine for Heard County.

Its contribution to the tax base, to the community’s welfare, plus the countless contributions from the employees that work there, has made it a sound corporate citizen for decades.

It is for that reason that I commend their announcement today to lay out a schedule for closing the ash pond at that facility. I have been on record pushing back against the EPA rules that put this plant at risk, most recently at an Atlanta hearing last summer.

One of those rules relates to how ash residuals are handled at coal plants that the US EPA recently has issued.

By Georgia Power making the commitment to develop a schedule for the handling of coal ash to an environmentally friendlier means will surely signal better long-term possibilities for this plant and for this community in which it operates.

Thank you to Georgia Power for managing the risk and continuing the investments in Heard County and across the region.

Sincerely,

Lee Boone, Chairman Heard County Commission
