Cole, Hutchins Pitch Braves to Extra Inning Win over Bobcats

Baseball has arrived and is in full swing this week for the varsity Braves. They defeated the Woodland, AL Bobcats yesterday 5-4 in extra innings to move to 2-0 at the Handley tournament in Roanoke, AL.

A solid combined pitching effort by Ben Cole and Ryan Hutchins propelled the team to the close win. The pair left 13 runners stranded on base and Hutchins scored the win in relief of Cole who went five plus innings.

Dalton Reed, who has been the hot bat to start the season drove in the winning run in the top of the 9th inning. A brief rain shower was not enough to halt play in the last two innings. [gpslideshow]

The top hitters of the game were catcher Noah Shelnutt who went 3-4 and Cody Stephens who had a big RBI double.

Dan Kimble and Cody Chapman were each 2-4. In game one of the tournament on Monday, the Braves knocked off Lineville, AL 11-1.

They will head back to Handley Friday night to face Cleburne County, AL (6:00 EST) which will determine placement into the last day of the bracket on Saturday.

The Braves lost both games by a score of 8-6 at the Home Plate tournament held last weekend in Peachtree City. Reed has started the season 10-16 (.625 avg) and Shelnutt is batting a solid .375 through the first four games.

On the hill, Brandon Smith has pitched well with a 1.11 ERA in one start. The JV Braves will take on Villa Rica Thursday at home (5:30EST).
