Corinth Store Owner Arrested on Sexual Battery Charge; Detained by U.S. Immigration

At 7:25 p.m. on January 5, 2012, a call came into the Heard County Sheriff’s office reporting an alleged act of sexual battery which had taken place at Pop’s Grocery in Corinth.

An eyewitness allegedly observed a highly intoxicated adult male, who is listed as the owner of the convenience store, slapping a 42-year-old female employee on the buttocks with an open hand.

Upon arrival at the store, investigators spoke with the alleged female victim. According to police reports issued by Captain Jane Olinger of the Sheriff’s Department, 44-year-old Gurmeet Singh Bhangu of Hogansville, Ga was placed under arrest and charged with misdemeanor sexual battery.

Bhangu posted a $5000 bond on the sexual battery charge but was not released after a hold was placed on him by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Olinger stated that Bhangu was picked up by immigration officials on January 9, 2012. No other information is available at this time.
