Critters In Your Attic?

The lengthy cold snap and freeze we have been experiencing this year is causing more problems than we Georgians are accustomed to dealing with.

Busted water pipes, flooded homes, high electric bills, icy road conditions, and critters in our attics to name a few. That’s right, critters in our attics!

Eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), are notorious for taking up residence in attics this time of year. And who can blame them?

Attics provide shelter from the elements and predators and make wonderful nesting sites.

However, incredible amounts of damage are also done by them chewing holes in your home in order to access the attic, insulation is pooped on and rearranged to build nests, wood is chewed on constantly, and insulation is stripped off of electrical wires causing a major fire hazard.

Fires caused by rodents (squirrels) are rarely covered by home owners insurance.

Unfortunately, breeding season is upon us too. Breeding occurs in December-February and May-June and is slightly delayed in more northern latitudes. Gestation lasts 44 days.

Most females begin their reproductive life at 1.25 years but can bear young as early as 5.5 months. Females may bear young twice a year for more than 8 years, and have a litter of 3-4 pups each time.

The scratching, chewing, and running around you hear in your attic is most likely a pair of mating squirrels getting ready to give birth and multiply.  Young squirrels learn from their parents how to find and take over other attics, perpetuating the problem.
