One of the biggest Georgia High School events of the year featured wrestlers from all seven classifications competing over three long days at the Centreplex Arena.

Denney got off to a strong start on day one Thursday winning a first round major decision 12-1 over fellow Region 5-AA opponent junior Maurice Mahone from Spencer High School.

In the quarterfinals late Thursday, senior Jakoby Cottrell from Chattooga High School defeated Denney 6-1 on a points decision.

Denney bounced back strong on Friday with pinfall wins over seniors Chanden Gordon from Coosa and Austin Johnson from East Dublin before falling 8-5 to senior Marty Bailey from Elbert County.

In Saturday morning’s medal match, Denney claimed his second state medal with a pinfall victory at the 3:51 mark over junior Chandler Diles from Harlem.

In addition to his two state medals as a varsity wrestler, Denney closed out his senior campaign with a 34-3 record and he was never pinned.

The 91.9 winning percentage is believed to be the best in school history.

Nathan McClellan dropped both of his state matches to finish out a very promising freshman season that saw him accrue a solid record of 21-12.

McClellan is a wrestler to watch out for in the coming seasons as he continues to gain more experience under head coach Jimmy Haynes.

The Braves will also hope to turn out more competitors in 2020-2021 after finishing the season with just four active grapplers.
