Devils Power Past Braves

(Bowdon, GA) — The Braves were unable to overcome a huge first half by the Bowdon Red Devils Friday night snapping a 20 game region winning streak for the Braves in a 46-20 loss at Warren P. Sewell Field.

A powerful rushing attack keyed the win for the Devils with running backs Darnell Holland and Tay Sheppard scoring three touchdowns apiece. The Devils did not attempt a pass all evening long and outgained the Braves in total yards 422-312.

The Devils led 21-0 at the halftime and took the wind out of the sails of the Braves offense with a big stop on a fourth-and-four inside the Devils 10 yard line.

The Braves fought hard in the second half trying to rally but were unable to make it close. Quarterback Emory Jones tossed two touchdown passes to senior Elijah Toney from 50 and 14 yards out, and Austin Barron added a 14-yard TD on the ground.

Barron rushed for 85 yards on the night while Duranta Dunson carried 20 times for 120 yards.

Dunson also returned to the defensive side of the ball for the first time since his broken collarbone in week two, a great sign for Coach Barron and the Braves as they move forward in the last two regular season games.

“Bowdon came out tonight and physically got after us I think they were more physical than we were and the first half they just kind of hurt us up pretty good,” said Coach Barron Friday night.

“Our kids will bounce back — they are resilient and they understand that we are still competing for a number two seed and we will be playing the next two weeks for an opportunity to host a state playoff. With that region we are crossing over with in round one (Region 6-AA) coming in as a one or a two seed is very important.”

The Braves (3-5, 2-1 in Region 5-AA) will prepare for Temple on a short week as the game has been moved up to Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

HHS will be offering free tickets to all elementary students that dress up in costumes, face paint, etc. for the rare weeknight region game.
