DPS Officers focus on unsafe driving behavior during ‘Operation Safe Driver Week’

(Atlanta, GA) — The Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is participating in Operation Safe Driver Week, July 14-20, which focuses on commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors with an emphasis on speeding.

During Operation Safe Driver Week, MCCD Officers will issue warnings and/or citations to CMV drivers who practice unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding.

During last year’s operation, officers issued 157 citations for speeding.

“The primary focus of the Motor Carrier Compliance Division is the enhancement of highway safety in regards to commercial motor vehicles. This includes educating CMV drivers and the motoring public about unsafe driving behavior like speeding,” said Major Johnny Jones, Commanding Officer of the Motor Carrier Compliance Division.

“Citations are issued as a necessary deterrent to affect driving behavior,” he added.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the most frequent driver-related crashes involving commercial motor vehicles were due to speeding in 2016.

In response, the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) focused this year’s “Operation Safe Driver Week” on speeding to reduce crashes, fatalities, and injuries involving CMVs.
