Dr. Leona Raughton

Dr. Marjorie Leona Robertson Raughton, age 89 of Franklin, Georgia passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.

Funeral services for Dr. Raughton will be conducted Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 2:00 P.M. from the Tom Stutts and Son Chapel with Reverend Brett Mathews officiating.

The interment will follow in the Franklin City Cemetery. The family will receive guests at the funeral home from 12:30 P.M. to service time Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Raughton was born on September 25, 1922, the daughter of the late Arthur Ralph Robertson and Leila Gertrude Stowe Robertson. She was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church. When her oldest child was eight years old she became a single mother.

She worked for twenty years at Callaway Mills. While the children were still in school she began her formal education.

She obtained her undergraduate degree from LaGrange College, her graduated degree from Auburn University, and event that she shared with her daughter Patricia, her Six Year also from Auburn, and finally her Doctorate from Nova University.

She taught for many years in the Heard County School System, and was Principal of the Macon County Junior High School. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Teachers Association, NEA, and served on both the Heard County Zoning Board and the Heard County DEFACS Board.

She enjoyed being in the middle of local politics and cared deeply for people in the community. She loved traveling and gardening, both of which she enjoyed having time for in her later years.

She shared fresh vegetables with many of her neighbors from her “community garden”. She possessed a strong determination and zest for life. Her desire to obtain knowledge never wavered and inspired all she knew to better themselves. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dr. B.J. Bassett of Roberta, GA.; two sons, and one daughter- in- law, Malcolm Jones of Franklin, GA, and James and Nancy Raughton of Rockmart, GA.; one sister, Edna Mae Roden of Crossville, AL.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Novel Jo Robertson of Sand Rock, AL., and Wayne and Jan Robertson of Fort Payne, AL.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leila and Arthur Robertson, one sister, Annette Gwinn, and two brothers, June Napire and Donald Robertson.

Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home of Franklin, Georgia is in charge of arrangements.
