Dunson and Edwards named first team all state by the AP

Two standout Brave football players, Duranta Dunson and Jake Edwards, received honors this week with selections to the 2012 Georgia Sportswriters Association All State Football Team in Class AA.

The teammates were both named to the first team offense, Dunson as a running back and Edwards as a lineman.

The last first team AP all state Brave was Dontavius Jackson selected as a running back in 2006.

Duranta Dunson becomes the youngest Brave ever named to any of the all state squads. The speedy sophomore carried the ball 157 times in 2012 for 1,622 yards at an average of more than 10 yards per carry. He also scored 24 touchdowns including two kick-offs returned for scores. Defensively, he also led the team in tackles with 87 and intercepted four passes.

Edwards becomes the first Heard County lineman ever named to the AP first team. The junior is considered a top college prospect by many, and is referred to by recruiters as tough, aggressive, technically sound, and a hard worker. Edwards joins Kyle Yates and Nick Wilkerson as the only Heard lineman named to an all state team.

Yates was named first team by the GACA (Georgia Athletic Coaches Association) in 2006, while Wilkerson was named first team by the AJC and honorable mention by the AP in 1996.
