Elderly man hospitalized after being hit by car

An elderly Franklin man is currently hospitalized at Atlanta Medical Center after being hit by a car Wednesday morning.

According to a report issued by the Georgia State Patrol 75-year-old Loyd Wilkes was in the roadway of HWY 34 East at Enon Grove Road when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The reports states that Mr. Wilkes had earlier been unable to make a turn in his vehicle at the intersection and traveled off the south edge of the roadway.

After walking back to his residence, he decided to go back and get the keys out of his vehicle, and his wife drove him back to the scene.

Wilkes was crossing the highway to go to his vehicle when he was hit by a 2004 Honda Civic driven by Steven Jason Dyer, age 33, also from Franklin.

Mr. Wilkes was taken to Piedmont Newnan and later flown to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment.

His wife, Mrs. Josephine Wilkes, said in a phone interview Thursday evening that she was praying for her husband and that he had just left surgery.

She stated that he had two broken legs as well as a serious head injury. No charges have been filed in the case.
