Escaped Heard County inmate and his mother quickly captured at Newnan restaurant

(Franklin, GA) — An escaped  inmate is back in the Heard County jail after escaping from a work detail overnight Monday and this time he is joined in jail by his mother.

According a report by Heard County Sheriff’s Office investigator Sgt. Dan Boswell, 27-year-old Joshua Glenn Gullatt was working a cleaning detail just around midnight when he escaped through a door.

Gullatt next made his way to the car of his mother, identified as 54-year-old Kathy Lynn Pence, who was parked nearby the facility. He was being held at the Heard County Jail awaiting transfer to the Coweta County work release program after being sentenced on burglary charges last month.

Before picking up Gullatt, Pence reportedly ran a stop sign in Franklin and was stopped by a city officer.

After a BOLO was sent out regarding the escape, it was determined the two were traveling in a black Cadillac Escalade.

Boswell says investigators were able to identify Kathy Pence’s cell phone based on a previous phone call between the two planning the escape.

Just about 90 minutes later at around 1:30 a.m, Sgt. Boswell was able to track the mother’s phone to the IHOP restaurant on Bullsboro Drive in Newnan where the black Cadillac Escalade was discovered to be parked out front.

Once inside the restaurant, investigators found Pence and Gullatt sitting in a booth.

Gullat and Pence were taken into custody by Coweta County deputies and later turned back over to authorities with the Heard County Sheriff’s Office.

Joshua Gullat is charged with escape and his mother Kathy Pence is now charged with aiding in the escape of a prisoner in lawful custody.

“Thanks to the good work between our dispatchers and the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, this escape was resolved in a timely fashion,” Boswell said. “We appreciate all their help.”
