Extra Innings Spoil Middle Braves Season Opener

(Villa Rica, GA) – With the first two games of the season being postponed due to the inclement weather, the middle Braves found themselves opening up the season on the road as they visited the Bay Springs Bobcats.

Any coach will tell you that starting the year with a travel game is a difficult task to be faced with.

The season started with a blast as Drew Wulff, down two strikes, belted a shot to centerfield which he turned into a triple.

Two batters later, Carl Lipford recorded the first RBI of 2012 as he doubled to bring Wulff across the plate.

Wulff was also on the mound as the starting pitcher and surrendered a run in the Bobcats half of the first inning. The game took on a see-saw battle back and forth as both teams seemed to have the other pitcher figured out.

Wulff would only last through the 3rd inning, giving up 2 walks and recording 4 strikeouts while allowing 5 Bobcat runs.

In the 4th, Trey Alford took the mound for the Braves, with much of the same results. The Bobcat hitters were aggressive at the plate and the see-saw battle continued.

The Braves’ hitters never gave up, continuously swinging, battling back each time the lead changed. The teams found themselves tied at 11 at the end of regulation.

Since the ball field at Bay Springs has no lights, daylight became an issue as the umpire decided to play one extra inning to decide the winner. The Bobcats managed to load the bases in their half of the inning and a deep drive to left field brought home the winning run. The final was Bobcats 12 Braves 11.

There were many bright spots for the Braves on the evening. Offensively, they battled all evening. Several of the Braves’ players had extra base hits which resulted in points on the board.

Defensively, the outfield made some key catches and Drew Blair stopped a “hot shot” at third that took a bad hop, no doubt denying extra runs from scoring.

The middle Braves will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Haralson County to meet the Rebels in another key road match-up. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Even though Friday is a teacher workday in the Heard County School System, the Braves will host the Bremen Blue Devils as their home opener at 4 p.m. in Franklin.
