Family confirms Class of 72 HCHS graduate died from COVID-19

(Franklin, GA) — A Heard County native was laid to rest Monday after passing away from COVID-19 and her family is asking the public to be mindful of the seriousness of the current coronavirus pandemic.

66-year-old Lugenia Lewis of Franklin passed away on May 18 at Tanner Hospital in Carrollton.

The 1972 graduate of Heard County High School was well-known and beloved throughout the community. She is the first known member of the Heard County Brave Nation to succumb to the virus.

Her sister, Arlisa Lewis of Franklin, says Lugenia was in overall good health prior to contracting the virus with the exception of being on blood pressure medications.

Arlisa shared the timeline of her sister’s sickness and subsequent death with the Heard Citizen in order to inform the public just how quickly a person’s health and life can be taken.

“I just want people out there to know that this virus is very real and people should be taking it seriously,” said Arlisa in a phone interview prior to her sister’s funeral service.

According to Arlisa, Lugenia was tested for the COVID-19 at her encouragement after she was potentially exposed to the virus.

She was tested on May 1 and informed of her positive result on May 4 but at the time was not experiencing any symptoms.

On May 9, Lugenia had to be rushed to the hospital after she quickly began to struggle with her breathing.

Due to COVID-19 visitation restrictions, Arlisa was unable to visit her sister in the hospital and says the last time she spoke with her was on the phone on May 12 prior to her being moved to ICU and placed on a ventilator.

Lugenia is survived by two children, a grandchild, and six siblings in addition to extended family members. She was preceded in death by a son and two other siblings.

After graduating from HCHS, she entered the workforce and was employed by Private Line Manufacturing Company and Bremen-Bowdon Investment Company.

Lewis is the third confirmed death in Heard County with COVID-19.

As of Thursday morning, there have been 30 recorded cases since the beginning of the outbreak.

The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Heard County on March 18 and that case also resulted in the first death in the county which was confirmed by the Governor’s office on March 24.

The second Heard County death was confirmed by officials at the PruittHealth nursing home in Franklin but has yet to be included on the Georgia Department of Health’s daily report.
