First Heard County football coach passes away at 68

(Piedmont, AL) – Heard County’s first football coach, Mr. Danny Lee Pounds, age 68, passed away at his home in Piedmont, Alabama on Friday April 26, 2013.

Pounds was born February 11, 1945 in Jacksonville, Alabama to the late Alfred and Lula Belle Pounds. A gravesite memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Neal Hill Cemetery in Centre, Alabama in his honor.

Pounds, also a teacher, formed Heard County’s first football team in 1972 and coached the team for five years. He was the coach during Heard County’s first winning season in 1975 when they went 8-2 behind perhaps the toughest defense in school history. The 1975 defense did not allow a single point to be scored at Staples Stadium that season.

Pounds was also a veteran that proudly served in the United States Army. He was a graduate of the Cedartown High School Class of 1963 and a graduate of Jacksonville State University Class of 1970 and he played football at both schools.

Coach Pounds is survived by his wife, Peggy Pounds; son, Jedadiah Drew Pounds; sisters, Joan A. Hardin, Anna Smith; niece, Dana Hardin; and nephew, Vance Jedadiah Smith.

The Perry Funeral Home of Centre, Alabama was in charge of the arrangements.
