Flag Braves End Successful Season at 6-1

The 5-6 year old flag Braves finished the regular season undefeated (5-0) and traveled yesterday to Mt. Zion, Ga for the Flag Bowl Championship. Unlike the Kiwanis Bowl, all of the flag bowl games take place in a single day tournament. Coach Ben Cosper and the rest of the coaches promised all the kids a trip to Pizza Hut for a pizza party if they were crowned the champions.

In the Braves first game of the day, they took on Bremen Black and scored a big 34-13 win. As usual they were led by quarterback Camden Cosper who scored three touchdowns. Will Alford and Todd Huey also scored and the Braves moved on to the next game to take on Bowdon Red.

A win in this game would place the kids into the championship game and most importantly one step closer to the pizza. This game proved to be a tough one as Bowdon Red showed up ready to play.

The Braves got on the board first when Camden Cosper ran it in but the extra point was no good and the Braves led 6-0. Bowdon Red quickly returned the favor with a quick score and a successful point after to take the lead 7-6. Cosper scored again early in the second but again the point after failed.

After another quick score by Bowdon and the point after they retook the lead at 14-12. The defenses dominated much of the third quarter before Bowdon was able to score once again near the end of the period and went on top 21-12.

In the fourth quarter, Huey got a big score to close the game to 21-18 but again Bowdon came right back to take a 28-18 lead. The tiny Braves fought hard until the very last play but were eliminated from the tournament with a fourth place finish.

The little fellows were pretty down and out about the loss, but thanks to their Coaches Ben Cosper, Todd Huey Sr., Josh Palmer, and Ashley Huey they were still treated to the pizza party which definitely seemed to help soften the blow.

(The Heard Citizen would like to extend special thanks to Rhiannon Chandler for keeping us posted every week about the happenings of the flag team.)
