Former Heard student killed in car crash

(Chambers County, AL) — One of the two teen passengers killed in a single-vehicle Chambers County car accident Tuesday afternoon was a former Heard County student.

14-year-old Autumn Thompson of Cusseta was pronounced dead at the scene along with her boyfriend 15-year-old David Smith of Lanett.

Investigators say Tuesday, July 5 at about 12:30 p.m., a 2013 Kia Soul driven by Daniel Hornsby, 18, of Valley, struck the guardrail at the Osanippa Creek Bridge along County Road 299 in Cusseta.

Autumn’s family told Elizabeth White of WTVM News in Columbus that Autumn was a beautiful person inside and out who loved life.

Autumn attended Heard County schools until she moved to Cussetta about two years ago.

Investigators say Smith and Thompson were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The name of a third passenger in the vehicle has not been released.

Alabama State Troopers say a crash report will be released to the public next week.
