Friday Hoop Roundup: HCMS girls advance to championship; Devils sweep

(Mt. Zion, GA) – Head coach Kathy Scott and the middle school girls basketball team defeated the Bremen Blue Devils 44-31 in the West Georgia Small School Division Championship semi-finals Friday at Mt. Zion middle school.

As a result the Lady Braves now advance to the championship game Saturday morning versus the rival Bowdon Red Devils. The Braves have defeated the Red Devils twice this season winning a close 31-29 contest in Bowdon and winning more handily at home 39-25.

In Friday’s game, a rematch from last year’s championship with the Blue Devils, the Lady Braves took advantage of a huge size advantage to overwhelm the Blue Devils on the boards, especially in the second half.

The Braves held a nine point advantage at halftime 21-12 with Kimberly Harris scoring five points.

In the second half it was the Hannahs that took over. Hannah Sanders scored 10 in the second half alone and tallied 14 for the game to lead all scorers.

Hannah Stephens was also crucial with eight points including two offensive put backs that sent the game out of reach late.

Alyssa Cosper and Sage Kelly each scored six while Ally Harris finished with four.

Tip-off for Saturday morning’s championship game is scheduled for 10:00 am back at Mt. Zion.

 

Red Devils 70, Braves 66

(Bowdon, GA) – After trailing the Red Devils after each of the first three quarters, the Braves stormed back to take a 58-57 lead in the fourth quarter before falling by four. Levi Brown was the catalyst for the Braves finishing with a career best 23 points and nine rebounds.

The Braves held a one point lead with under one minute to play before a dagger 3-pointer and 5-0 run by the Red Devils put the game away. In addition to Brown’s big scoring effort Damon Pearson knocked down 17, Deron Swint and Jonathon Hunt each scored nine while Dunson finished with eight.

Elijah Toney missed the game due to injury. The Braves travel to Spencer Saturday night (7:30).

Basketball HCMS + Varsity 062Red Devilettes 64, Lady Braves 50

(Bowdon, GA) – The Lady Braves drop the non-region game handily to the Red Devilettes after being outscored 22-8 in the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 42-42 after three quarters.

Three Lady Braves finished in double digits including Jemeka Parks (19), Shemeka Parks (13), and Jasmine Cook (12).

The Lady Braves have four games remaining all region games with an especially important game Tuesday at Bremen. Saturday night they also head to Spencer (6:00).

JV Devils 54, JV Braves 36

(Bowdon, GA) – The Devils were too much for the Braves who played well early before falling back in the second half.

Lashon Echols topped the scoring for the Braves with 13.

Carl Lipford and Collin Nutt finished with six and five respectively. The JV Braves are off Saturday night.
