(Tallahassee, FL) — On December 9, Florida State Softball announced its 2016 recruiting class, consisting of five student-athletes that will be joining the Seminole family next season.

This week, we are highlighting each individual to allow fans to know more about those who will soon be wearing the Garnet and Gold. Today, the spotlight shines on Anna Shelnutt, a catcher from Hogansville, Ga.

Shelnutt is a senior at Heard County High School and, along with future FSU teammate Cali Harrod, was a member of the school’s first state championship in any sport when softball brought home the 2014 GHSA AA title. The Braves also reached the state tournament in 2015.

For her career, Shelnutt has been chosen as an All-State First Team member three times and also earned defensive Player of the Year honors.

In her senior season, she tallied a .475 batting average with 13 home runs and 50 RBI. The 13 home runs broke the Heard County record of nine home runs, set by Harrod in 2013.

“Anna comes to us as a very strong, defensive catcher,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “She’s going to make an immediate impact right away as a catcher and has many relationships with current players as she has played with the Atlanta Vipers organization.”

Shelnutt has competed with the Vipers, as well as the Georgia Academy Power and Georgia Impact travel teams.

Academically, she is in the top five of her class and has earned a spot on the “A” Honor Roll each semester.

Shelnutt chose Florida State over offers from Michigan State, Georgia Southern and North Carolina.

“I chose Florida State because it has a warm and welcoming atmosphere,” said Shelnutt. “I feel like I am home when I am here, and also my best friend Cali is on the team.”
