(Franklin, GA) — Heard County Comprehensive High School senior Garrett Whit Curbow has been named the school’s 2020 PAGE STAR Student.

Curbow selected Mrs. Penny Hood, Media Specialist at Heard County High School, as his STAR Teacher.

Melinda Brown, President of the Heard County Chamber of Commerce, the local STAR program sponsor, has announced the honor.

A luncheon postponed due to COVID-19, will take place to honor Garrett in June or July when we are able to have large gatherings.

Coweta-Fayette EMC, Georgia Power, Carroll EMC, and Oglethorpe Power have given generous donations for the STAR luncheon.

Curbow, son of Lorena and D.J. Curbow of Roopville, earned the recognition for academic achievement and performance on the SAT.

Garrett Curbow is a member of the National Honor Society, FCCLA, Y-Club, Academic Bowl, and Yearbook. He also dual enrolls at the University of West Georgia.

Garrett loves to read and write. Currently, he has written two books and is continuously working toward his goal of being a published author.

On the Reading section of the ACT, he made a perfect score of 36.

In addition to being STAR Student, he has received awards such as the Georgia Certificate of Merit Award, the Top Five Academic Award, and the West Georgia RESA Young Georgia Authors Writing Award.

In the Fall, Garrett will attend Georgia College and State University on an academic scholarship and plans to major in English. He is thankful to have a family that has always supported him and his aspirations.

In the future, he wants to teach both high school and college, while pursing his dream of being a novelist.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 62nd year, is sponsored, administered and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation.

Since its creation by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in 1958, the STAR program has honored nearly 27,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement.

To obtain the 2020 STAR nomination, graduating high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

STAR begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR Teacher to share in this recognition.

The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from one of the more than 170 statewide civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors of the STAR program.

Students then compete for school system titles, and those winners compete for region honors.

Region Winners compete for the honor of being named State PAGE STAR Student. STAR Teachers continue on with their STAR Students at every level of the program.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators honors outstanding students and educators and encourages academic excellence through competitive academic programs such as PAGE STAR, the PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades and the PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon.
