General Runoff Election Day in Heard County

(Franklin, GA) — The polls will be open from 7:00 AM thru 7:00 PM Tuesday at all six Heard County voting precincts for the highly anticipated General Election Day runoffs.

Two Georgia seats in the United States Senate will be up for grabs with incumbent Republican David A. Perdue taking on Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff.

In a special election runoff to fill the unexpired term of Johnny Isakson, appointed incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler will be facing off with Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock.

Isakson resigned from his Senate seat at the end of 2019 with three years left on his term due to health concerns.

On a national scale, the two elections could not be more important with control of the United States senate hanging in the balance.

The Republicans currently hold 50 of the 100 senate seats, while the Democrats hold 48. When there is a 50-50 tie, the deciding vote is cast by the vice president.

That will be Democrat Kamala Harris after the Biden administration is sworn in on January 20. Therefore, if Democrats can win both seats they will control the Senate.

A Senate majority is crucial in deciding a range of legislative changes, cabinet appointments, potential presidential impeachments and nominations to the supreme court. Republicans have controlled the Senate since 2014. The Democrats already have a majority in the House of Representatives.

With so much hanging on these two Georgia races, money has been pouring in to the state to support both sides. More than US $400m was spent on political ads by the middle of December, most going to the two Republicans.

A Democrat has not won a Senate race in Georgia in 20 years.

A race for Public Service Commissioner is also on tomorrow’s ballot with incumbent Republican Lauren Bubba McDonald, Jr. taking on Democrat Daniel Blackman.

The six voting precincts in Heard County include Centralhatchee City Hall (Centralhatchee Precinct), Heard County Fire Station #8 (Cooksville/Corinth Precinct), Heard County Fire Station #5 (Enon Grove Precinct), Ephesus Community Center (Ephesus Precinct), The Old Recreation Center Gym (Franklin Precinct), and Heard County Fire Station #6 (Southwest Precinct).
