The tractor CDE not only tests students’ ability to drive a tractor, but it also takes into account their knowledge of safety and tractor servicing.

The contest is divided into three parts. The first phase requires the student to operate a tractor and implement through a predetermined course in five minutes.

The objective is to move around the course and make a square. Competitors then have to back up and hitch and unhitch a trailer. Judges are nor only looking at the driving of the students, but also proper dismounting and checking to make sure everything is turned off before operators leave the tractors.

In the second phase, the student’s knowledge of tractors is tested. Students are quizzed on causes of tractor accidents, wheel spacing, carburetor function and power stroke at the competitions.

The third phase or section consists of questions that require the student to find the answer in equipment operation manuals.
