Girl Scouts are Mad About Science

(Heard County) — Girls at Ephesus and Centralhatchee Elementary Schools recently participated in the Girl Scouts Science Program.

Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta provided a day of science fun to both schools through a grant they received from Carroll EMC.

Girl Scouts was one of 57 local organizations to receive an Impact Grant through Operation Round Up®, a voluntary program funded by EMC members.

While participating in this project girls explored science through the lens of winter fun. They built a snowman using dough with a powdered base.

While building, the girls learned about the different types of precipitation. Once they built their snowman they had the opportunity to make him melt and experience an endothermic reaction.

However, we all know that that nice cold winter day needs to be followed with something warm. The girls followed up with an exothermic reaction experiment that had them giggling with delight as they watched their concoction bubble up out of the safety container.

To wrap up the experience girls learned about potential and kinetic energy, the building block that facilitates all chemical reactions.

Overall, it was a fun day and the girls left with smiles on their faces and hopefully a better understanding of science and a desire to learn more about the amazing world around them.

Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta strives to ensure that every Girl Scout in the Greater Atlanta area has the opportunity to explore different aspects of science, technology, engineering and math each year.

Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta plans to do this by providing “fun with purpose” events, activities and resources to girls throughout our council.
