Handley Tigers Rally over Mustangs to Capture Alabama 3-A State Championship

The Handley Tigers of Roanoke won the Alabama 3-A State Championship earlier today in an exciting kind of game that is normally reserved for pre-scripted Friday Night Lights episodes on television.

The game took place at Bryant-Denney Stadium (the home of the Crimson Tide) in Tuscaloosa. Junior Running back Duran Zachery was named MVP of the game that came down to the final play.

With under 4 minutes to play in the game and trailing by a score of 14-7, the Tigers were able to score on a Zachery rush to cut the deficit to 14-13.

Head coach Mike Battles took a gamble and went for the 2-point conversion to take the lead. The Tigers came up just inches short and seemingly looked to be in a dire circumstance.

The desperate situation quickly took an upturn when Handley was able to recover an onside kick to find new life. They then drove down the field and scored a touchdown with just 42 seconds on the clock.

The extra point gave them a 20-14 lead as the Tiger faithful who made the long trip to Tuscaloosa rejoiced. Madison Academy was not finished yet though as they to drove all the way down inside the Tiger red zone with just 5 seconds to play.

An incomplete pass as time ran out gave Handley its 1st Alabama State Championship in history. They had only made it to the finals once before in 1977 when they were defeated by Stephenson 17-16.
