HCMS boys and girls prepare for finals after knocking off Mt. Zion

The HCMS boys basketball team gained some momentum Thursday when they came out on top of a close match-up with Mt. Zion on the road.

After the first quarter of action, the Braves held on to a slim 13-12 lead in a game that remained very close throughout. In fact, it also a one point game after the first half which featured lots of fouls called on both teams and lots of free throws.

In the third, a 3-pointer by Drew Blair extended the Braves lead to four at 32-28. At the end of the third however the hard-fought contest remained close with the Braves on top 35-33.

Emotions ran hot for the fans of both teams late in the game as they protested calls by the officials. In the end the Braves were able to hang on and won by a final of 51-46.

The Braves secure the #2 seed in the West Georgia Middle School Conference finals which will take place this week. The boys will face arch rival Bowdon in their first game on Thursday at 4:30.

The tournament is being held at Villa Rica Middle School. If the Braves defeat the Red Devils on Thursday they will advance to the championship game on Friday at 5:45.

In the girls game, Coach Scott’s squad had an easier time with the Eagles as they knocked them off 37-15 after dominating for most of the game. Several players came off the bench to provide a spark for the Lady Braves including Sarah Schofield, Aspen Barker, Anna Cosper, Shealynn Sumner, Alexis Nelms, and Sage Kelly.

The girls secure the #1 seed for the tourney and will face the winner of today’s Villa Rica match-up Wednesday at 5:45 also in Villa Rica. Good luck to both teams as they try to secure the division championships this week. (Info courtesy of Kristen Sumner)
