HCMS Braves set season win record

(Franklin) — The Heard County middle school baseball season came to an end after a close 4-3 semi-final loss to the visiting Bowdon Red Devils Tuesday in Franklin.

Dale Thornhill started the game on the mound for coach Heath Horn and Tray Owens came on in relief. Both pitched well with each allowing only two runs.

A ground-out by Key Whitlow brought home the first run for the Braves in the bottom of the fourth to chip away at the Devil 3-0 lead before they made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth.

Owens drove home two with a sharp base hit in the home half of the fifth to close the gap to 4-3.

First baseman Drew Cornelius had a couple of nice defensive plays in the game.

Morgan Raymond pitched well to lead the Bowdon to the win and earn the Red Devils a spot in Wednesday’s title game versus Bremen. Bremen took that game and the trophy with a 10-0 victory.

Coach Heath Horn was proud of his squad on a successful season.

“This 8th grade bunch right here I’ve had all of them since the sixth grade and I knew they were going to be special,” said Coach Horn after the game. “This was not exactly the way we wanted to go out, but that guy on the mound for Bowdon was throwing some gas out there so hats off to him.”

The Braves set a new middle school record for season win with nine improving on last year’s team that won seven games.

“There’s three or four in this 8th grade group that will have a chance to go over and play for Coach Bianco pretty quickly. We also have a good group of sixth graders that will come back bigger stronger and faster next year. Very proud of all these kids.”

Enjoyed seeing them play all season. Appreciate coach Horn style of coaching. Allowing the 6th graders to play one full game speaks strongly.
