HCMS Girls Down Callaway in Regular Season Opener

The HCMS girls basketball team opened the regular season on the road Tuesday at Callaway Middle School in Lagrange with an exciting 33-29 victory.

The Lady Braves actually trailed the Cavs 15-11 at the half but opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of play and never trailed again.

The Callaway girls never stopped fighting and had pulled to within just two points with just seconds to play but two key free throws by Hannah Sanders sealed the win.

Alyssa Cosper led the way in scoring with 11 points followed by Sanders with 8, Jordan Watson with 6, and Kemaiya Brewer with 4.

I was very happy with the way our girls played today especially considering that we had no practice time at all last week due to the holiday. We did not play well in our last game against Auburn in the Thanksgiving tournament so it was good to see the girls bounce back with such a strong effort, ” said Coach Kathy Scott after the game.

The girls will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to face the Temple Tigers at Bay Springs Middle School in Villa Rica (4:30).

They open division play next Tuesday at Villa Rica Middle School. The boys did not fare as well against the Cavs, who many believe to be one of the best middle school basketball teams in this area in the last few years.

The Cavs completely dominated the Thanksgiving tournament and continued their strong play against the Braves. The Braves tried to keep it close in the first half but trailed 25-10 at the break.

The second half was all Cavs as they outscored the Braves 38-1 to win the match-up by a final of 63-11. Collin Nutt led the scoring for the Braves with 3 points.

Coach Sikes and his boys team will also travel to play Temple Thursday before opening division play at Villa Rica next Tuesday.

The HCMS teams will be road warriors during December as they don’t return home for any games until January.
