(Franklin) — The HCMS wrestling team finished in third place at Saturday’s West Georgia small school division wrestling finals held at Heard County Middle School in Franklin.

Wyn Denney led the Braves by winning the 160-pound championship with pins over Bowdon and Bremen. He got the pin in the finals over Bowdon despite a bloody face from an inadvertent busted lip he suffered during the match.

Denney finished his eighth grade season undefeated in the small school division and with only three defeats overall.

The Bremen Blue Devils won the overall title with 269 points followed by Bowdon with 146. The Blue Devils dominated the tourney winning titles in 12 of the 16 weight classes.

The Braves had 128.5 points followed by fourth place Mt. Zion with 99 and Temple with 96. Nine Brave athletes earned medals by finishing in the top three in their respective weight classes.

Five Braves finished with second place medals including Cody Sickman (105), Colton Meacham (112), Wesley Allen (144), Kristian Spradlin (200), and Chance Shelnutt (235).

Third place Braves were Luke Alsop (77), Joseph Whitehead (91), and Hollis Alsobrook (120).

“I was very pleased we had nine kids place in the top three and get medals,” said head coach Thomas Sickman after the matches.

“We had one of our guys out sick (McKorey Smith) at 152 lbs and he would also have placed. In that case, we might have been able to beat Bowdon for second place, but I’m pleased with third with such a young team. We had two sixth graders place (Alsop and Whitehead) and one got fourth (Noah Cantrell) which is awesome.”

Other tournament champions were Braden Sauls (Bremen-70), Jake Keaton (Bremen-77), Daniel Decker (Temple-84), Clay Johnson (Bremen-91), Brandon Oaks (Bremen-98), Ty Morris (Bremen-105), Seth Morris (Bremen-112), Luke Crawford (Bremen-120), AJ Brock (Bremen-128), Nathan Shirey (Bowdon-136), Jacob Stephens (Bremen-144), Gavin Millians (Bremen-152), Ben May (Mt. Zion-175), Ben Buchanan (Bowdon-200), Chris Wilson (Bremen-235), and G’Marious Barker (Bremen-265).

The winner of the 200-pound class, Ben Buchanan of Bowdon, won the 200 pound class for the second consecutive year and finished his season with an undefeated record of 15-0. Buchanan is the son of former WWE Superstar Bull Buchanan, who was on had for the matches.

Match referees for the tournament were Bleu Allen and Taylor Kerce. Aiding Coach Sickman in running the tournament was Bowdon head coach Nathan Horsley.

The Braves traveled to Cedartown Monday for their last matches of the season, a combined varsity/middle meet versus the Bulldogs.
