HCMS Soccer team smashes Tigers for historical first win

(Franklin) – The brand new Heard County Middle School soccer team christened its home field in a big way Thursday afternoon, drubbing the Temple Tigers 9-1 in the first soccer game ever hosted by a Heard County school.

Despite a lack of any soccer experience with the exception of just a couple of players, the team has relied on pure athletic ability and solid coaching to surprise many who thought the season would a long one with many losses.

The one player with the most experience, 8th grader Trey Wiggins, led the way scoring four goals including the first two on the board early in the game.

Wiggins was not alone, however, as several other players also contributed to the huge offensive output. Austin Miller and Jaden Moreland each added two goals and Michael Cadwell also scored early.

In goal, Peyton Ehlers performed well allowing only a single goal to the Tigers in the second half.

While the win came as a shock to many, it did not surprise either team manager as both Sara Wiggins and Emmie Harrod predicted a Braves victory prior to the start of the game.

Head coach Ken Wiggins was pleased with his team’s performance: “It is always good to get that first W whether it be the first win of the season or the first win of a program which is what we got today. It was good to see a lot of goals scored by our offense. We had four people score today and I saw lots of good passing which we have been working on. We have two home games next week and we hope to see a lot of people out to support us,” stated Wiggins after the game.

The Braves will be at home next Tuesday on the HCMS football field to battle Bowdon. They will also host Mt. Zion on Thursday. All games start at 4:30.
