(Franklin) — There is a slight chill in the air which signals that fall is here. It also means that championship time is drawing near.

Softball and cross country are entering the final week of regular season competition this week with their playoffs being held next week (Oct.6-9). There are two weeks of football left with the playoffs starting Oct.16.

Our football team had a very exciting game last Thursday with the Villa Rica Wildcats. During the pre-game, we had a visit from Air Evac Lifeteam 77 based out of LaGrange. They delivered game balls to Shane Manders from Budget Paint and Body and Joe and Angie Nutt from Nutt Roofing. These game balls were presented to these local businesses thanking them for all of their support of HCMS athletics.

The Braves got off to a slow start and were down 12 points with less than three minutes to go in the first half. However, our guys showed lots of composure and were able to battle through the deficit and score 24 unanswered points in the last 18 minutes of the game to secure the win.

Our cross country team also had a home meet last week with many athletes excelling. Lily Langley took third with her best time of the season: 14:14. Donta Dunson also had a personal best time of 12:54 and placed 6th. Other runners with personal bests we’re Bailey Brown, Colson Jiles, Megan Butler, and Seth Mason.

The cross country team will be on the road on Thursday (Temple) and Saturday (Central) this week. These meets will be their final tune up before the championship next week.

On Tuesday of last week, our Lady Braves played a division game against Mt. Zion. The Lady Eagles had our number again as they were able to pull out a win.

On Thursday, our Lady Braves traveled to Bowdon seeking revenge from an earlier defeat and came up short again in a pitchers duel. Our ladies dropped the game by a score of 2-0.

Our ladies wrap up the home softball season against Villa Rica on Tuesday and close out the regular season with a trip to Temple on Thursday. With two wins our ladies can lock up the #3 seed in the upcoming tourney. They could possibly move up to the #2 seed but would need help from some other teams.

We are rapidly approaching the end of the first nine weeks of school. We all need to work together to make sure our student-athletes and students are staying on task with all their work and assignments. Let’s finish the nine weeks strong.

“There’s always the motivation of wanting to win. Everybody has that. But a champion needs, in his attitude, a motivation above and beyond winning.”- Pat Riley
