HCMS Welcomes Celebrity Speaker

On Monday, September 19th Ron Clark visited Heard Middle School to speak to the faculty. Ron Clark has been called “America’s Educator.”

In 2000, he was named Disney’s American Teacher of the Year. He is a New York Times bestselling author whose book, “The Essential 55”, has sold over 1 million copies and has been published in 25 different countries.

He has been featured on The Today Show, CNN, and Oprah, and Ms. Winfrey even named him as her first “Phenomenal Man.”

His classes have been honored at the White House on three separate occasions. Ron’s teaching experiences in New York City are the subject of the uplifting film, The Ron Clark Story, starring Matthew Perry, better known as Chandler from Friends.

Most recently, Ron Clark has founded The Ron Clark Academy, an inner-city school serving students from across metro Atlanta. The privately funded institution is unique for its innovative teaching methods and curriculum based on worldwide travel.

Teachers from around the world visit the Academy to observe the innovative and “out-of-the-box” methods for achieving student success.

The faculty at Heard County Middle School has been reading his latest book, “The End of Molasses Classes; 101 Extraordinary Solutions for Parents and Teachers” as a professional learning book study.

Mr. Clark spoke for about 40 minutes followed by refreshments and fellowship with the teachers. “In the field of education, Mr. Clark is the most well-known and respected teacher in our nation today. It was honor to have him visit our school,” stated Mike Roberts, Heard Middle Principal.

Ron Clark speaks to the Faculty of Heard County Middle School

We were so privileged to have Mr. Ron Clark speak to us at our school Monday. He brings such joy and excitement to the classroom with his techniques. You could feel the energy in the room as he recounted his experiences and gave advice on how to encourage and motivate students to really work hard and get into the material. You can’t ignore him when he is speaking! He’s walking on the tables and chairs, singing songs, and cracking jokes; he’s a performer and he showed us how to really make the kids want to hear what we are saying. He spoke for less than an hour but, in the few short days since his visit, I have already seen changes in our school as I walk around. The teachers have a little more fire and are stepping out and trying new things in the classroom. Many of us are going to RCA for a visit soon and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say how excited I am for this life changing day! Kristi Oates, 7th Grade Teacher

It was so nice to have Mr. Clark at our school! He spoke with dynamic energy about motivating students and teachers to do their best in the classroom. I feel inspired to find creative ways to motivate our students to read and learn. I had to ask him about the RCA campus and the media center. They have a bungee jump in there! They do Accelerated Reader and they have a bungee jump! I’m so impressed with his book and so honored to have such a celebrity visit our school. I wish everyone in our system could have been there.”  Glovis South, Media Specialist
