(Franklin) — The 12U Braves football team started the regular season off right Saturday with an impressive 15-8 win over a strong Carrollton Trojan Gold team at the Heard County Recreation Department.

The Trojans battled back from a 15-0 halftime deficit and were driving for a possible game tying score with under one minute to  go in the game when the Braves defense came up with a fumble recovery deep in their own territory.

Stand-out defensive back Ashton Bonner came up with the huge recovery off a hustling strip by Ethan Lawson (see video below) to seal the win.

“That was a tough little game right there — we dominated the first half but the second half they came out playing,” said head coach Cain Dean. “They had a good team. Our kids showed a lot of heart today to hold and win this one.”

The Braves defense made a statement early in the game when Lawson, only a first-year player, recovered a fumble with the Trojans driving.

Quarterback Eli Dean then marched the offense down the field on a nice drive that culminated in a tough 3-yard TD run by Noah Cantrell. Cantrell also added the conversion to give the Braves the 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The other Brave touchdown came on a 55-yard run by Bonner before the half. Dean connected with Lawson for the 2-point conversion and the 15-0 lead.

Leading the charge for the offense were offensive linemen Lance Skinner, Taylor Cheeves, Colton Meacham, Brent Hull, and Wesley Crabtree.

The Braves’ defense played aggressive ball in the second half  including an interception by Bonner and a batted ball by Lawson. Franklin Jackson and Blake Baldwin also played well.

The 12U Braves travel to Bremen next week to take on the Blue Devils. See the full schedule of upcoming youth football games below.
