(Franklin) – Georgia law (O.C.G.A., Section 20-2-281) requires that writing assessments be administered to students in grades three, five, eight, and eleven.

The writing assessment for grade eight consists of an evaluation of each student’s response to an assigned prompt. Students do not get to choose their topic.

They are assigned a topic from a prompt bank representing two genres: expository and persuasive. Students are allowed 100 minutes to brainstorm, pre-write, edit, and create their final draft.

Ninety-three percent of Heard County Middle School 8th graders met or exceeded standards on the writing assessment. These results are the highest in school history.

Eighth grade teachers, Kim Stallings and Melissa Googe, are very proud of their students. “I would like to say that a major part of our school’s success on the writing test stems from the overall determination and hard-work displayed by students and teachers, alike.  This accomplishment goes to show that our students are among the best in the state!” stated Mrs. Stallings.

“There is a lot of discussion regarding multiple-choice standardized tests and whether they truly measure student achievement. When students can be given a random topic and create an intelligent and well-crafted 2-3 page response to that topic, that is an example of academic excellence,” stated HCMS Principal, Mike Roberts.

“I am very proud of our teachers and students. Improving the quality of our students’ writing has been a goal for HCMS for the past two years. Eighth grade English Language Arts teachers Mrs. Stallings and Mrs. Googe went above and beyond the call of duty tutoring students until 5 o’clock in the afternoon in the days leading up to the assessment. It certainly means a lot to me and our students to know we have teachers with a ‘whatever it takes’ attitude,” Roberts added.

Two students had perfect scores on the writing assessment. These students were Jacob Starnes and Maggie Henderson. Heard County had the highest scores in the RESA district and the 10th highest scores in Georgia.
