(Franklin) — Chairman Lee Boone, head of the Heard County Board of Commissioners, sent the following statement to local media Friday afternoon addressing concerns over a phone scam where the commissioner’s office phone number is showing up on the Caller ID.
According to Boone’s statement, the Heard County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the matter.

Attention Citizens of Heard County:
There has been a report of telephone calls containing an automated message regarding credit card interest rates made to a local resident.
The Caller ID shows the number as 706-675-3821 which is the Commissioners Office.
I can assure the public that no calls are being made from this office of that nature.
Apparently, the scammers have acquired the technology to manipulate the phone number projected on Caller ID as if it originated from this office.
The Heard County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation at my request.
If anybody receives a call of this nature indicating it originated from this office, please save the number, which will also show the date and time of the call.
Contact the Heard County Sheriff’s Department at 706-675-3329 and ask for Sgt. Deborah Williamson to report this, during regular business hours.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Lee Boone, Chairman
Heard County Commission
