Heard County Chamber of Commerce Announces STAR Student

Star Student Ms. Jessica McQuain and her Star Teacher Mr. Brad McLain

The Heard County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Heard County High School Senior, Jessica McQuain as the Heard County STAR Student.

Jessica is the daughter of April McQuain. Upon graduation, Jessica plans to attend Georgia College and State University where she will major in Journalism.

Jessica has chosen Heard County High School Educator, Brad McLain as her STAR teacher. Mr. McLain taught Jessica Language, World Literature and British Literature.

Mr. McLain has been an educator in Heard County for seven years. Mr. McLain and his wife Stephanie have two children, Abigail and Ansley.

Jessica and Mr. McLain will both be honored at the Chamber Spring Luncheon on March 13, 2012.  The luncheon will be held at the Heard County 4-H Center (old rec gym) on Glover Road.  Reservations are required and may be made at www.heardchamber.com.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was created to focus public attention of Georgia’s outstanding students and the teachers who have influenced their academic development.

Each year a top academic senior in each participating Georgia high school is named the STAR student for that high school. The student must have the highest score on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class.

Each student is asked to name his/her STAR teacher. Since Heard County School System has only one high school, the school winner is also the system winner. System winners go on to District recognition and District winners compete for State STAR student.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) coordinates the statewide STAR program in association with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Georgia Department of Education.

The Heard County Chamber of Commerce has been the sponsor of this local recognition event for the STAR program’s existence.
