Heard County Marching Braves Go To the 2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl

(Atlanta, GA) -The Heard County Marching Braves really kicked off the New Year big by marching at the 2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl, featuring the Auburn Tigers and the Virginia Cavaliers.

The band had not intended to march in the bowl, but when asked to take another band’s place and receive free tickets, they could not turn it down. For most of the members, it was their first time marching in a college bowl game.

To prepare for the big game, the Heard County Marching Braves spent three days of their Christmas break working on the music and parade marching. On the third day of practice, they took a bus  up to the dome to attend “mass practice” with the other bands.

Most of the other bands were from out-of-state; some from Tennessee, Chicago, Louisiana, etc. During mass practice, the bands rehearsed coming on and off the field, where to stand, when to play, and where to go after the performance.[gpslideshow]

On the day of the game, the Heard County Marching Band members headed to Atlanta and waited their turn to march in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Parade.

After the parade, the band was able to attend Fan Fest, which was a time to relax and have a little fun before the big game. It included  games, snacks, activities, and the introduction of the teams and their bands.

After Fan Fest, the Marching Braves got ready for pregame. Each member found their spots on the field and played “Patriotic Parade Sequence” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the crowd.

When pregame was over, the bands went to watch the game and waited for our turn to head to the field for half time show. During half time show, the high school bands  preformed “Poker Face” and “Born This Way”, both made famous by Lady Gaga. The band was then able to finish watching the game after the performance.

This opportunity will always be such an exciting memory for each band member. Each student felt so proud to represent Heard County High School, make new friends, and share the amazing experience with their fellow band members. ~Written by: Erica Hendrix
