(Coweta County) — Garrett Curbow, a 14-year-old 8th-grader at Heard County Middle School, was recently announced as the middle school winner of the 2015 Student Story Writing Contest hosted by The Friends of Coweta Library.

Garrett’s historical fiction short story entitled “Dead Mary” was selected as the winner among 66 middle school entries in the contest.

Garrett and other entrants were challenged to write a short Historical Fiction genre story between 1,000-2,500 words and also design a corresponding book cover.

Writers were judged on how well the characters, setting, plot, conflict, and theme were developed as well as how clearly the illustrated cover depicted the story.

Historical Fiction is the genre of literature comprising narratives that take place in the past and are characterized chiefly by an imaginative reconstruction of historical events and personages.

Garrett received a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card for his winning story.
