Heard High Anglers Reel in First Place at Lake Oconee

(Buckhead, GA) — With the fog, high winds, and less than ideal temperatures, it wasn’t the kind of weather fisherman generally hope for, but despite these unfavorable conditions, the Heard County High School bass fishing program scored its first big victory at Sugar Creek Marina on Lake Oconee last Saturday.

The tandem bass fishing combo of senior Chris Carroll and junior Payton Caldwell along with boat captain David Carroll came out on top of a large field of 154 boats in less than ideal conditions as the tournament was delayed for over two hours due to heavy fog at the marina.

Senior Brave Chris Carroll (L) and junior Payton Caldwell (R) won first place at the Lake Oconee Tournament last weekend in Buckhead, GA

The team of Carroll and Caldwell landed the maximum of five fish for a total weight of just over 12 pounds.

It was a huge win for the Brave Angler fishing program in only its second year of competition.

Heard County fishing coach Justin McCullough is proud of his fisherman and the surprising accomplishment.

“I was really surprised they were able to go out there and get that win especially since it’s only the second year of our program and with this being only the second tournament that Chris and Payton have ever fished together,” said McCullough.

Chris Carroll says the conditions were tough on the lake Saturday.

“We just had to grind it out today — the mental game was a huge key for us out there,” said Carroll after the tourney. “It was a rough day with not just the fog but the wind too.”

Carroll also had to fish the tournament without very little sleep following the Braves second round home playoff win over Pepperell the night before. Carroll is the kickoff specialist for the Braves.

The stand-out senior hopes to pursue fishing in college possibly at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Georgia. He says the addition of Caldwell to his team has been very beneficial and the two have already become good friends.
