The Newnan Cougars took home the first place trophy in the JV division at Monday’s Academic Bowl meet hosted by Heard High School.

(Franklin, GA) — On Monday, October 3rd, Heard County High School greeted in style 16 schools from the surrounding RESA region for the second match of Academic Bowl season. Heard High serves as the host every three years.

The Academic Bowl is a quiz game that tests players on a wide variety of academic subjects.

Standardized quiz bowl formats are played by elementary school, middle school, high school, and university students throughout the United States.

The host team does not compete at its own meet. However, other school systems, and members of the RESA highly praised this event.

“In 27 years of coaching and coordinating West Georgia RESA academic meets, I can truly say this was one of the best meets that I’ve had the opportunity to witness,” said Theresa Stapler, coordinator of RESA Academic Bowls following the meet.

Coweta County high schools dominated the varsity meet with Northgate placing first with 650 points, Newnan finishing in second place with 640, and East Coweta claiming third place with a three round total of 570. Rounding out the top four was Bremen High with 500 points.

The Newnan Cougars claimed first place in the junior varsity meet.

Tammy Garcés, Heard Academic Bowl advisor, would like to thank all Heard County teachers, administrators, students, and community members who worked together to achieve an outstanding event.
