(Franklin/Times~Journal) — The Heard Senior Activity Center recently celebrated their 40 year Anniversary.

On September 12,1977, the program began with Dorothy Cummings Gosdin as Director.

The Center started as a program for fellowship, nutrition awareness, a balanced meal and many health resources for the elderly citizens of Heard County.

Meals were catered in, but Dorothy thought there was room for improvement, so with the help of the county and Chatt-Flint, a central kitchen was added and Mrs. Juanita Goodson was hired as Food Service Coordinator. The kitchen cooked, not only for the Heard Senior Center but for the LaGrange, Hogansville, Grantville, and Newnan Senior Centers.

Upon Mrs. Goodson’s retirement, Terrie C. Kidd was hired as her replacement.

Dreams of a new and larger Center began. After a second grant request and approval, construction on a new center began.

In 1997, the current wonderful new and roomy center was opened. Over the years enough money had been saved from quilt raffles, craft sales, bake sales, and auctions to completely furnish the new building. Talented members made curtains and decorations.

More services have been added and more activities are scheduled. One of the senior’s favorite activities is the out of town, overnight trips.

Some of the members had never seen the ocean or been on a plane ride, but thanks to volunteers these things have been made possible.

Mr. Bert Kelly volunteered his services and plane and flew a group to Daytona Beach and a group to Washington, DC.

The group have made many trips over the years and still continue to do so. A few of the places the group have visited are Pigeon Forge, Nashville, Memphis, Asheville, Savannah, Myrtle Beach, Mobile, Pensacola and many others.

In 2000, Dorothy retired and Terrie became Director. Lou Wakeman was hired as Food Service Coordinator.

From1977 until the present 2017, many changes have taken place. The Center remains a focal point for Seniors in Heard County.

In June of 2017, Mrs. Kidd retired and Mrs. Wakeman became the new Director and Kelly Walker became the Food Service Coordinator.
