(Centralhatchee/Times-Journal) — Heaven Bound Church of God in Centralhatchee celebrated their 25-year Anniversary Homecoming on Sunday, July 9th.

Heaven Bound Church began April 19, 1992 on Easter Sunday as a Mission Church in a little wood frame building that was used for Cassel’s Restaurant which is presently Head To Toe Salon.

Heaven Bound Mission Church began under the leadership of Pastor Debbie Kendrick and Assistant Pastor Elmer Golden. Mr. Harvey Kendrick, pastor’s husband played the guitar and their 9-year-old son Lee sang solos.

Singer Doyle Johnson came to assist Pastor Debbie with music and singings. Sharon Noles and Gidget Bishop were the first piano players for the church.

Pastor Kendrick told how the church was ordained by God and many people came, souls were saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost.

She stated, “People that were bound up with drugs and alcohol got delivered! People with all kinds of sickness and diseases got healed! Heaven Bound Mission Church became a lighthouse for people that were hurting, lost, poor, troubled, unloved and with other needs. God changed their lives!”

Pastor Kendrick said, “God blessed Heaven Bound Mission Church to be organized with 21 charter members.”

It became Heaven Bound Church of God in the Church of God organization out of Cleveland Tennessee Headquarters on Sunday, July 12, 1992.

Pastor Kendrick received information from the United Methodist Organization that the Methodist Church was for sale up the street, across from Pastor Kendrick and Brother Hervey’s home. They prayed and then talked to her State Overseer Bishop Delbert Rose who gave permission to place a bid to purchase the church building.

The Methodist Organization was asking $42,000 and Pastor Kendrick bid $25,000 and they took the bid. The first service was held February 3, 1993 in the present beautiful red brick church building with wide glass stained picture windows.

Pastor Kendrick stated, “Angels have been seen here. We have experienced a fog and a cloud in services which is representation of God’s Glory. Many ministers have been birthed here by receiving their calling to preach the gospel. This church has become a house of salvation, prayer, refuge, love, peace and healing. This is a church where everybody is somebody special!”

At Heaven Bound’s Anniversary Homecoming, the church had a memorial service for members that have went home to be with the Lord over the last 25 years. A candle was lit for each one in the service and their picture placed on the fellowship hall wall in their memory.

Those that were honored were Troy H. and Lucille Buchanan, Albert Kendrick, Jerry Wilson, Linda Whitley, Carolyn Wright, Doris Patterson, Nathan McCormick, Nancy Turner, Ben Watts, Frank and Mary Spence, Shanna Brooks, Gidget Bishop, Jane Yates, Louise Ray and Wanda Harcrow.

Pastor Debbie Kendrick has been the pastor for 25 years of her 40 years she has been in ministry.

The church family presented Pastor Kendrick and Harvey with a large framed portrait of them in front of Heaven Bound Church in honor of the 25-year anniversary celebration.
